Hertz signs embedded wireless deal

Car rental giant Hertz has just signed a three-year agreement with AT&T to enable the company to monitor and manage the firm’s cars in the Connect by Hertz program wirelessly.
According to the terms of the agreement, Hertz will use AT&T’s wireless network to manage the 1,500 vehicles in its hourly rental program. The company’s new program is similar to the model introduced by Zipcar, which makes it possible for customers to rent cars hourly. The new technology will link customers wirelessly with Hertz so that they can locate and unlock vehicles. It will also provide the rental car company with driving time and tracking data.
“We decided to work with AT&T because we needed a reliable wireless provider whose network could go where our customers are going,” said Joseph Eckroth, the Hertz senior vice president and CIO.
This is not the first partnership for the two companies. They have worked together in the past to connect airport and off-airport rental outlets with major corporate sites via AT&T’s VPN service.
Sprint Nextel has struck a similar deal with Ford Motor Company to install computers in their cars that connect with the Sprint network.
