The price of oil has changed the way many people drive these days, and car hire agencies are reporting a much higher demand for smaller, more fuel efficient cars. This means that companies with large numbers of sport utility vehicles in their fleets are being forced to offer incentives to customers willing to take the financial fuel burden on by renting a gas guzzler.

Alamo Rental Cars in the United States reports that the number of SUVs being hired out has dropped significantly. Alamo spokesperson Leah Foust says, “If we have an excess of vans or SUVs, we’re going to lower the rates a little bit. There’s specials constantly going, so definitely the Web is the best way to book a car nowadays.”

Another way to save money on rentals is to book early and as Foust says, book online. Hiring a car from a booth at the airport means many fees and taxes will be tacked on to the initial rental price.
