Holiday operator hopeful France VAT cut will attract Brits

Cafés and restaurants in France will soon see a reduction in VAT that may help offset the weak pound, encouraging visits from more UK holidaymakers, a specialist travel operator has said.
From 1 July, VAT on all cafés and restaurants in France will be reduced from 19.6 per cent to 5.5 per cent.
France and Spain accommodation specialist P&V Holidays is estimating that this will mean a savings of 10 per cent for customers. A €15 meal, for example, will cost around €13.20 from 1 July.
The operator is offering discounts on its properties as well, of up to 45 per cent until November, in the hope of stimulating UK demand.
P&V’s ‘Eurobuster’ offering is based on the summer 2008 exchange rate, when one pound bought €1.28, and holidays were approximately 22 per cent cheaper than early June of this year, when the exchange rate was £1 to €1.05.
Cathy Rankin, the operator’s sales and marketing manager for the UK, said: “We are proactively trying to offset the effects of the weak pound by introducing ‘Eurobusting’ offers of up to 45% off all of our properties in the summer break.”
She added: “The VAT cut in restaurants compliments this as many of our customers rely on good value local restaurant food during their stay.”
