Hot summer forecast boosting domestic tourism bookings

After the Met Office’s recent prediction that Britain would see an extended period of warm weather over the summer, holiday operators are reporting a boom in the number of domestic holiday bookings.

A number of travel operators are saying that they expect that the forecast for warm and sunny weather and the weakness of the pound against the euro and the US dollar will mean record numbers of UK holidaymakers taking summer breaks closer to home.

Hoseasons, one of the largest operators in Britain, reported that online bookings doubled on the day the Met Office released the forecast and that bookings over the May Day Bank Holiday increased by 103 per cent year-on-year.

A spokesperson for holiday cottage rental company Cottages4you has said that bookings were up 44 per cent over last year, with Cornwall, the Lake District and Scotland being top destination choices.

Tim Fullam, who is the marketing director at Hoseasons, noted: “The company had its best ever year in 1997, thanks partly due to the ‘bounce’ of Britain coming out of a recession and good weather, and 2009 looks as though it will come close to matching this performance, despite the current economic uncertainty.”
