Hybrid car rentals may become cheaper in California

If legislators get their way in San Francisco, renting a hybrid car in this Californian city may soon get a little less expensive, thanks to a proposed $15 rebate. San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom held a news conference earlier this week, in order to announce that all those who decide to hire a hybrid vehicle from the city’s airport may soon be eligible to receive the unique $15 rebate. The most popular hybrid cars currently available include the Toyota Prius and the Honda Civic, both of which tend to cost almost the same as a full-sized passenger vehicle. Those who decide to rent one of these fuel efficient and environmentally-friendly cars can at least rest assured that they will save money on petrol, can expect to receive a rebate and will drive away in the knowledge that they are doing something positive for the environment.

Rental companies located at the San Francisco International Airport have also been offered an important incentive to include more hybrid cars in their fleet. Mayor Newsom announced that all those firms that ensure that at least 15 percent of their fleet is comprised of fuel efficient cars, may expect to receive a 20 percent reduction on airport concession fees. This may not only be hugely beneficial for the individual car hire firms, but may also end up positively impacting the renter, if companies consider passing down some of these savings to customers.

More than two million vehicles are rented from outlets at the San Francisco International Airport on a yearly basis. While many renters and car hire firms are keeping their fingers crossed, the proposed piece of legislation must still go through an approval process before it is implemented.
