Ibiza clubs in San Antonio told to turn the music down or face closure

West End San Antonio IbizaAuthorities on the Spanish isle of Ibiza say all-night party clubs will be forced to turn the music down to make life more bearable for residents. Councillors have the clubs of San Antonio firmly in their sights for a crackdown on noise pollution expected to kick off in time for the peak summer tourist season in 2018.

San Antonio is the second biggest town on Ibiza and has been described as the planet’s capital for clubbing by Time Out magazine. Environmental enforcement officers are being draughted in to ensure compliance on maximum decibel levels by all clubs. The council has warned that non-compliance will lead to permanent closure.

The council says allowed maximum decibel levels at night will be 55 and during daylight hours the limit will be 10 decibels higher. Council officers have been out and about measuring noise volumes and they say current decibel readings are typically 85 and above.

San Antonio councillors are debating the merits of setting up an Acoustic Protection Zone. The first part of the zone the new regulations will focus on is West End, or El West as locals refer to it. This area is infamous for its scenes of drunkenness and debauchery and is known as the best place to party until dawn.

Pablo Valdes is the environmental councillor for San Antonio and he told local media sources there was no other alternative than a ban on loud music to improve the lives of residents. He said preventing excessive noise was weeding out the root of the problem.
