Car hire operators could begin to see a boost in business from the rise in British Airways passenger traffic, after the airline’s passenger numbers rose for the first time in 14 months.
The 0.9 per cent gain was seen over the Easter holiday period, as compared with the same period last year, and means that more passengers were travelling abroad and likely to need rental cars on arrival.
On its site, Carrentals.co.uk has reported the news, and has noted that it sees the increase in passenger traffic as an encouraging sign.
In comments to Bloomberg, George Stinnes, who is the director of finance at BA, said that the carrier is still cautious about demand for air travel, as the Easter holiday is not always indicative of what is happening in the market overall.
“The market conditions really haven’t changed,” Stinnes commented.
Premium-class ticket sales, according to Stinnes, continue to be under pressure.
In a Daily Telegraph report it was noted that holidaymakers looking to hire cars this summer may be in for a rude awakening, ending up with vehicles that are in poor condition, as rental car operators decide not to replace older vehicles due to financial realities.
A shortage in cars that available for hire is also having the knock-on effect of prices being higher than normal.
