A maharaja’s palace in India took top place in TripAdvisor’s annual Traveller’s Choice awards for 2016. In the recently released list, the city of Jodhpur’s Umaid Bhawan Palace snapped up number one place in the Top 25.
The nominations for Traveller’s Choice are based on reviews posted by travellers and guests on TripAdvisor ratings pages. The awards take into account all aspects of the hotel experience and include the quality of accommodation and service plus how they score on value for money.
Over 7,000 properties from nearly 100 different nations featured in the 2016 Traveller’s Choice list. The awards have been running for the past 14 years and also feature categories based on themes such as beaches, attractions, museums and holiday destinations.
In addition to the Top 25 hotels, other sub-categories in this genre cover the likes of bed and breakfasts and all-inclusive resorts. Marketing director Barbara Messing released a statement saying that travellers choosing award winning establishments could be sure they were getting something that had been tried and tested by the TripAdvisor community.
Umaid Bhawan Palace is an art-deco structure said to be the planet’s biggest private home. A section of it has been converted into 64 opulent suites and rooms. The palace’s huge gardens are a haven of tranquillity when compared to the hustle and bustle of the busy streets of Jodhpur.
The Shinta Mani Resort is near the temple complex of Angkor Wat in the Cambodian town of Siem Reap. This resort followed the maharaja’s palace with second place. The Bellevue Syrene in Sorrento, Italy was third and the La Siesta Hotel in the Vietnamese capital of Hanoi came fourth.
