InterContinental Hotel Guests Evacuated in Boston Fire

Over the weekend, an electrical fire at the InterContinental Hotel in Boston caused the evacuation of the property’s guests. The fire started at about 2am, and electrical inspectors, firefighters and other workers arrived at the hotel.

According to Steve MacDonald, the spokesman for the fire department, the electrical fire started in the basement electrical room of the hotel’s garage. The power had been turned off, which required the building of 130 condos and 424 rooms throughout 21 floors to be evacuated, he explained. Many of the guests had to stand in the street in their pajamas, robes and bare feet from 3:30am, he said, adding that the cause of the electrical fire hadn’t been found yet.

There was a wedding that had taken place the night before (Friday), so the hotel had 37 different rooms full of wedding guests. Some of the wedding party had to wait in the street with their tuxedos still on, and they were really inconvenienced from the incident, said father of the bride Bob Hogan. He added that his daughter and new son-in-law had to spend their wedding night sleeping on the ballroom floor of the Boston Harbor Hotel. (At least it didn’t ruin the actual wedding though.)

Stephanie Loeber, the spokeswoman for the InterContinental Hotel, said that there were about 800 guests and residents staying at the property. They were finally allowed to enter their rooms at about 9:20am, and everything went back to normal, she continued. No injuries were reported, she added, and compensation for the night is being arranged.
