30-year old Mitsuhisa Kobayashi of Itami City, Hyogo Prefecture, Japan, has been arrested for stealing rental cars according to local police. Kobayashi stole the cars by installing his own GPS systems in the vehicles and tracking them to a location where he could easily steal them using copied keys. He told police that he had so far stolen eight cars.
Now unemployed, Kobayahsi used his specialist knowledge learned form his previous job as a car assembly worker to install devices that would emit a signal even with no power on in the car. Police said he did not act alone, but enlisted the help of his two former spouses, who would be the ones to rent the cars from the rental agencies.
When investigators finally caught up with him, he was in possession of three of the eight stolen vehicles. Kobayashi reportedly told them afterwards, “I wanted to drive my favorite cars. I sold the other five cars on the Internet.”
