From May of next year the budget carrier, Jet2, will be offering a new service from East Midlands Airport to Tenerife South Airport. The airport at East Midlands serves the surrounding cities of Nottingham, Derby, Sheffield and Leicester, and residents from these areas are expected to benefit from this new service. The cost for a one-way flight will start at around £60 and they have been on sale since August. Jet2 already flies to Lanzarote in the Canary Islands fromthe East Midlands airport, as well as Turkey, Corfu, Paphos in Cyprus and Sharm el Sheikh in Egypt.
This is the second new introduction of a flight to Tenerife from by the airline, as it just recently announced a scheduled service flying there from Belfast Airport. The airline already provides connections to Tenerife South from other UK airports, including Manchester, Newcastle, Blackpool and Leeds. The low-cost carrier is thought to be one of the better airlines for travelling on in the UK according to a recent publication. Their main competition comes from Ryanair and Easyjet. Ryanair are doing well in the hard times and are continually posting profits next to their name as are Easyjet, while the bigger commercials are struggling along.
The majority of tourists to Tenerife are Brits and this year until the end of August saw almost one million visitors from the UK. This is not that far off from last year’s figures to date and the destination keeps on growing. The location of the island offers year round good temperatures, which is why almost 80 per cent are return visitors and Brits make almost 60 per cent of their total tourist numbers.
