Following the seizure of a large quantity of drugs from a South Africans Airways (SAA) plane at Heathrow airport, a female security guard has been arrested on drug trafficking charges in Johannesburg.
The guard was one of the 16 security staff on duty responsible for clearing crew members for the South African Airways flight from Johannesburg to London on Monday.
Fifteen SAA crew members working on the flight were arrested early on Tuesday morning at Heathrow, when 50kgs of marijuana and four kilogrammes of cocaine were found in three separate bags, which were thought to belong to the crew.
All 15 were later released on bail and not charged, but will be required to return to London in March to potentially face charges.
A spokesperson for SAA, Robyn Chalmers, commented to local radio in South Africa that the investigation was proceeding well in Johannesburg.
“So the investigation is moving very swiftly, which we are very pleased about, and hopefully we will be able to get to the bottom of this quite soon,” the spokesperson said.
“I believe that the police investigation in London is still [ongoing], but I think that the [South African Police Service] will be in close contact with the authorities in the United Kingdom. They also have people in the United Kingdom that they will be working with,” Chalmers added.
