Krakow tourism caught between stag nights and gays
Posted on: August 18th, 2008 by Robert Bergerson“There’s nothing quite so quintessentially British than grown men setting off for foreign climes before subjecting the local population to a barrage of colourful songs, vomit and innuendo,” it states in the introduction to the In Your Pocket travel guide to Krakow, Poland.
Local tourist authorities and the local population are showing signs of being fed up with drunken British stag-nighters, and have raised a few eyebrows and the ire of local Catholic opinion by saying that they’ll target gay and lesbian tourists instead.
“I don’t know which is worse!” Piotr Kucharski, speaking on behalf of the Christian Culture Association declared. The association has launched a protest campaign by email against targeting the ‘pink purse.’ He added that “drunken Britons may get their genitals out in public. But we don’t want gays performing public obscenities either.”
In the heat of the protests, city tourism officials have now dropped using the term ‘gay’ from their promotional activity.
“I’ve been told by my bosses that I’m not allowed to speak on this subject,” confirmed Magdalena Sroka, head of the Krakow Festival office. But she did confirm plans, however, to advertise the attractions of Krakow to prospective gay visitors.
