Largest boat ever to sail down the Mersey River
Posted on: October 22nd, 2009 by Robert BergersonThe Queen Mary 2 is the largest vessel grace the waters of the Mersey as it is due to arrive in Liverpool on Thursday morning. The huge passenger boat is one of the biggest in the world and it is the largest to have ever sailed down the Mersey. Owned by Cunard Cruises, the vessel is to take its trip to Liverpool to celebrate its fifth birthday. The liner is taking a tour of the UK and this is just one stop on the journey. She weighs in at an impressive 151,400 tonnes and is a great example of one of Liverpool’s best ships.
Cunard Cruises are based in Liverpool and the trip down the Mersey River seems like an obvious choice for a route to celebrate its birthday. The company has won numerous awards over the years for its services to the industry, and it has been based in Liverpool for over 170 years since it was founded back in 1839. Its main offices have been in Liverpool ever since and it is because of its Merseyside roots that the company chose to sail the huge liner in Liverpool.
On board the Queen Mary 2 the celebrations continued with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra playing out to passengers as well as other Liverpool-related themed celebrations. The boat is the most costly liner ever made and it will only add to Liverpool’s bid to become the UK’s biggest port, looking to take over from Southampton that currently acts as the most used UK port.
