Learner drivers to be allowed on UK motorways in 2018

UK motorwaysThe UK’s government has verified it is preparing to change current laws which bar learner drivers from driving on the nation’s motorways. Following a public consultation on the issue, transport-secretary Chris Grayling said the first L-plate drivers will be using the motorways next year.

The Department for Transport (DfT) says the new ruling will apply to motorways in England as well as Wales and Scotland. The DfT’s update on the change notes that restrictions will apply and learners will only be permitted to drive on motorways with qualified driving instructors and in dual control vehicles.

The transport-secretary explained that learner drivers with motorway experience under their belts would be able to use the routes better once they had passed their tests. He continued by saying it was better to get that experience in a controlled environment and under the watchful eye of professional instructors.

Mr Grayling carried on by saying learners would build up knowhow of how to negotiate and drive on motorways. On another note, he added that young and inexperienced drivers were much more likely to be involved in accidents, or even killed, on Britain’s roads and motorway skills might help cut the figure.

Allowing driving lessons on motorways was first proposed two years ago. Former road-safety-minister Andrew Jones stated that the more varied driver training was the better prepared learner drivers were for using the UK’s roads safely. He finished off by saying if all drivers were able to use motorways in the proper manner, the UK’s traffic would probably flow more smoothly too.
