Lightning strikes a jet skier

A Brit holidaymaker staying in Cancun, Mexico was in a critical condition last Friday after she was struck by lightning in a freak thunder storm. The girl, 19 year old Amy Brislen who was with her boyfriend and another couple was rushed to hospital and was originally thought to be in a coma.

On hearing the news her parents flew out to Cancun immediately to be at her bedside after the accident. Doctors say the teenager has stabilised but was still not fit for travel back to the UK.

Friends and work colleagues have left messages of support for Ms Brislen on her Facebook page saying that they are thinking of her and hope she gets well soon.

The Foreign Office said that they were aware of the situation. “We are currently providing consular assistance to a British national who is in hospital in Cancun. We were notified about the accident on Saturday July 11. We have since been in regular contact with her family and the hospital,” said a spokesperson.

Many travel websites warn of freak storms in the Cancun area especially when it is hurricane season from June until November. Travel website Tripadvisor.com warns travellers that, that time of the year can be particular popular because it is cheaper for travel and accommodation but you could be caught up in a bad hurricane.
