London car rental cheaper than other popular destinations

London is known to travellers as one of the most expensive cities in the world, but that doesn’t necessary apply to the cost of hiring a car.

This is according to a survey conducted by CarDelMar, the online car hire broker.

The broker launched an online index known as the ‘Gas Guzzling Grid,’ which provides travellers with an accurate picture of the costs of hiring a car at popular destinations around the world.

For example, car hire in London won’t cost you as much it will in Berlin, Melbourne or Paris, despite petrol prices in London being among the world’s highest.

A number of key factors were taken into account when CarDelMar compiled its comprehensive cost table, including the basic cost of the hired vehicle, insurance and extras for one week, fuel costs for 250 miles and currency exchange rates.

Oslo, according to the index, is the most expensive city in the world for car rental. It costs four times as much in Oslo as it does in Dubai, and twice as much as it does in London. The cost of car hire in Paris is about double that of Dubai. Other cities ranking high on the cost list are Vienna, in second place behind Oslo and Pisa, Italy, landing in third place.

Los Angeles, on the other hand, rates as the second-cheapest city for car rental, and is closely followed by Cape Town, South Africa and another city in the US – San Jose, California.

“Once we had put all these factors into our formula we realised we had come up with an accurate and helpful comparison index,” commented the managing director of CarDelMar, Carsten Greiner.
