London has topped the TripAdvisor global table of excellence with a massive 3,210 certificates awarded for 2015. The awards covered a swathe of the English capital’s prime tourist attractions, accommodation establishments and eateries.
London easily beat all comers and second placed Rome was more than 400 certificates behind with just 2,763 certificates. Paris was third with 2,760 certificates and New York fourth with 2,307. Barcelona scooped 1,514 certificates to take the fifth spot.
The TripAdvisor Certificates of Excellence are based on reviews posted up by travellers, hotel guests and diners. The reviews rate the particular establishment in areas such as quality, cleanliness, location and hospitality. The annual awards are based on the preceding 12 months’ reviews and take into account the constancy of positive accolades.
The breakdown of London’s Certificates of Excellence is restaurants and other dining venues with 2,198, tourism sites with 558 and accommodation venues with 454. The awards do not only cover famous names and brands as there are plenty of cosy bed-and-breakfasts and obscure tourism draws in the rankings.
The UK as a whole garnered 40,464 certificates for 2015. This total figure was an increase of a third when compared with the 2014 awards. The UK snapped up 31,325 certificates for that 12-month period. The Scottish cities of Edinburgh and Glasgow came second and third with 732 and 457 certificates respectively in the 2015 awards.
The heritage northwestern seaside town of Blackpool came fourth and collected 351 certificates while Manchester took 323 and fifth place in the UK rankings. The results for the awards were announced on Tuesday by TripAdvisor.
