London Underground Staff Ballot for Industrial Action

It has been announced that London Underground staff are being balloted for industrial action in a dispute over pay and other issues. The Rail, Maritime and Transport (RMT) union, which represents the workers, says that the staff working in the power control room will be voting on if they will take action.

Union general secretary Bob Crow says that they have tried to negotiate a deal for the concerns of their members over power room grade progression, but London Underground has failed to propose a serious package that meets promises they have previously made for pay parity and additional benefits. The latest proposals have been rejected 100% by the members, he explained, and they now have no other option but to move to an industrial action ballot involving the essential workers, who power the whole Tube system.

Crow went on to say that they have no doubt a rock solid mandate will be delivered. They hope a strong yes vote will force London Underground to return to the negotiating table with a significantly better offer, he added.

A spokesman for Transport for London said that London Underground has been working with all unions to develop new ways for track access control and power control workers to progress in their careers. The proposals will see most staff given pay raises and would be based on introducing a new skills framework to give them a clear guide on the performance they have to display to progress, he continued. Negotiations are ongoing, he added, and they urge the RMT to continue constructive talks.
