The opening of the first ever cake hotel in London has come and gone. The hotel was open for guests on March 21 for one night only. This hotel, which was fully decorated with editable goodies, took a team of 14 cake markers to help put this one-of-a-kind hotel together.
The 14 cake makers came from Britain’s biggest cane sugar brand known as Tate & Lyle Sugars. They spent more than 2,000 hours putting this hotel together. It then took them some 900 hours to fully decorate this unique hotel. In the end, they used over 600 kilos of their famous sugar.
People who were lucky enough to stay at this hotel were encouraged to eat all they could. Here, almost everything was editable. The hotel had cushions made out of vanilla and the windows and walls were covered in more than 2,000 macaroons. There was even a rug that was made of 1,081 meringues that had to be hand-stitched together.
Of course, each room was different. Some of the rooms had windowsills completely made from fudge. People could even enjoy a nice bath full of caramel coated popcorn. Some rooms even had edible books right on the bedside table. One thing was for sure, people definitely didn’t go hungry while staying at this hotel.
The hotel itself had three floors with eight rooms. Each of these rooms was packed with thousands of different baked goods for guests to eat. Between these eight rooms there were over one hundred pieces of edible art. The rooms, which were called tasting rooms, were all inspired by different regions around the world.
James Whiteley, who is the senior brand manager for Tate & Lyle Sugars, said that they think the cake hotel was able to perfectly capture the excitement that they feel behind their product. It captured the inspiration and expertise that Tate & Lyle Sugars new golden brown cane sugar can be used to create.
James went on to say that the “Taste Experience” is more than just about adding sweetness to people’s cooking. It is about flavor differences. It is about appearance and texture. These are things that Tate & Lyle Sugars pride itself on. Overall, the company hopes that the cake hotel was able to demonstrate the versatility of the new brown and golden cane sugars. The company hopes that it will motivate people to be more imaginative in the kitchen.
Although the cake hotel is now over, people had a chance to win a free stay at this one-of-a-kind hotel by tweeting to Tate & Lyle Sugars. They were supposed to explain why they should be allowed to stay in the first ever cake hotel. Tate & Lyle Sugars said that they received some very interesting replies to their request. They were obviously not able to invite everyone, but they choose the best ones out of the ones they received and invited them to stay at the first ever cake hotel. No word yet on if they plan to do this again in the future.
