2008 has been a difficult year for British Airways who has been ranked as the worst performer of all airlines surveyed by Association of European Airlines (AEA). A recent survey by several European airlines gathered information concerning flight delays and lost luggage.

In regard to lost luggage one in every 36 passengers on British Airways was found to be waiting in vain at the luggage carousel. This number is the equivalent of seven passengers on a full Boeing 747 losing a bag. One in 40 passengers lost a bag during the same period of 2007. BMI was the second worst performer in regard to lost luggage with one in 45 passengers suffering.

A BA spokesman said the findings are no surprise since the two worst performers are also the two biggest carriers at Heathrow. More passengers means there will be more incidents of lost bags - it’s a known fact.

Several passengers have also reported problems with BA’s in-light service. Telegraph Travel reports they have been inundated with letters complaining about the in-flight entertainment systems. “I flew on BA 875 from Moscow to London - on take-off the crew announced that the whole in-flight entertainment system was not working and had not been working for a few weeks but they had not had time to get the aircraft in for repair,” said Stewart Poyner, a Telegraph reader. “They had not even put newspapers out like they normally do so there was absolutely nothing to do on the four-hour flight.”

The BA spokesman blamed the lack of reading materials and entertainment on a new audio and video on-demand system, installed on 747s then other aircraft, but said that things were improving and they anticipate all problems to remedied quickly.
