Low cost transatlantic service launched by Canadian operator

A new low-cost scheduled transatlantic air service has been added to its line of travel products by Canadian direct-sell tour operator GO Travel Direct.

From this summer, travellers in Halifax, Montreal, St Johns, Toronto and Winnipeg will be able to fly non-stop to Europe with GO Travel Direct on Finnair, one of the longest-operating scheduled airlines in the world.

In December an agreement was reached between Canada and the European Union that deregulates transatlantic air travel between the two entities. A new treaty makes it possible for European airlines to operate direct flights to Canada from any EU airport, freely invest in Canadian carriers and also establish operating bases in Canada.

Previously, regulations dictated that carriers based in the EU could only provide service to Canada from their home countries.

Ian Dodd, the president of GO Travel Direct, said: “With the new bilateral agreement for flights between Canada and the EU, Finnair is taking advantage of a new opportunity by partnering with GO Travel Direct to offer service between Canada and Europe.”

He added: “We see an opportunity for flights between Canada and London and Paris due to lower fuel costs. We are in a position to purchase fuel at the current lower rates whereas many airlines have already purchased fuel at rates locked in at the previously high rates.”
