Car rental companies in Spain’s holiday hotspots say they will struggle this year with meeting the demand for hire cars despite a drop in the number of tourists expected as many decide to holiday at home.
Many firms on the Costas have had to reduce the number of vehicles they have in their fleet this year as banks are not lending as much as some need to maintain the cars. “To maintain a fleet of 100 cars a company is left with around 1.3 million of debt, but with the banks refusing to issue credit to buy fleets, there are fewer cars to offer,” said Antonio Quintana, manager of Central Car in Malaga.
Some car rental agencies in Spain are even reportedly opting to use second hand vehicles with more than 200,000 miles on the clock to bridge the gap of demand. Others have increased prices considerably for last minute booking as the cars are so much in demand.
Do not expect to hire a car when landing in Spain as there are not many left and you will find that those that are left will mostly be the higher end vehicles which compare in price significantly to a Ford Fiesta.
