Maldives to introduce green tax for tourists

The country’s new leader, President Mohammed Nasheed, has thought long and hard about climate change and wants to make the islands nation the first carbon neutral place in the world.

Mr Nasheed has only been in power for a year but he is already addressing the issue of rising sea levels which could take over the Maldives as it only sits seven feet above sea level on average. He has become a voice at the forefront of global warming and is urging other nations to take heed of what is going on in the world.

The green tourist tax will be introduced as a way that the country can save for the future and the possibility that they may have to search out and but a new land to call their own. Mr Nasheed has pledged to make the Maldives the first carbon neutral country within a decade.

The planned green tax is thought to be around $3 per day per tourist and will help the nation in the future. President Nasheed has also said he will not be travelling to United Nations climate summit that being held in Denmark this December as he will prefer to stay in the Maldives and save the money.
