Malev reopens Budapest to New York route

Malev Hungarian Airlines has announced that it will re-launch service on its Budapest to New York long-haul, transatlantic route, giving passengers the opportunity to fly five times a week during the spring season, and take daily flights starting on May 26, 2008. All Budapest to NYC flights depart from Ferihegy Airport’s Terminal 2B and arrive at New York’s JFK Airport. During the winter months, many Malév passengers who had relied on this non-stop transtantlic route likely felt inconvenienced, as the only way they could reach New York was by taking a Malév operated flight to Zurich, and catching an American Airlines connection from the Swiss airport. Malév also cancelled its Budapest to Toronto route last fall, but service between the Hungarian capital and Canada’s largest city is expected to resume as well, later this month.

Malév is a full-service, flag carrier, which offers passengers both business, as well as economy class cabins. The vast majority of the airline’s flights are within Europe, and it has an especially strong presence on the eastern half of the continent, connecting Budapest to cities not served by most carriers, such as Tirana, Sarajevo, Pristina, Skopje, Chisinau, as well as a range of cities in Romania.

Founded in 1946 and originally called Maszovlet, Malév now operates a fleet of 27 planes, with an additional two on order, and flies to 58 destinations. The carrier was successfully privatized last year, and was bought by AirBridge Zrt, a private firm, with strong ties to Russia’s AiRUnion.
