Man arrested on Dubai beach says he was naive

A British businessman who has returned home after being convicted of having sex on a beach in Dubai commented that he was “in the wrong place at the wrong time.”

Thirty-four-year-old Vince Acors admitted to be “extremely naïve,” but claimed that both heavy drinking and unmarried couples showing affection in public were common in Dubai.

In October, Acors and Michelle Palmer, a 36-year-old publishing executive, were sentenced to three-month jail terms by a Dubai court for public indecency and engaging in unmarried sex. On appeal in November the sentences for both were suspended and they were permitted to return to the UK, in time for Christmas.

Acors, a resident of Bromley in south-east London, insists that he did not have sexual relations with Palmer, who lives in Oakham, Rutland.

He did say, however, that they had “physical contact” on Jumeirah Beach in Dubai, at the time of their arrest early on 5 July. He added that many aspects of the matter were exaggerated, and some statements made were “complete lies.”

Acors went on to say: “Everything is available, but it is also illegal. The locals take part in pretty much every single activity as much as the expats do. If you go to Dubai, every single hotel has bars, some up to ten bars,” he said. “They all hold free or cheap drinks evenings or days.”
