Marriott goes green
Posted on: April 30th, 2008 by Hannah WestfieldMarriott hotels have had a rather “green” month this April, as the international holiday accommodation chain placed a special emphasis on creating an environmentally-friendly business environment over the past four weeks. Around 3,000 luxury and high-end hotels associated with the Marriott brand took part in what has been billed an “environmental awareness month.” The campaign took place in the 67 countries where Marriot currently operates hotels or resorts and it ensured that just about everyone-including top executives, hotel managers and staff, as well as clients-knew about these new green efforts.
For example, managers of Marriott hotels in London took a little time out of their busy schedules and helped Thames21, a local charity, clear rubbish from the famous, but hardly exceptionally clean river that flows through the British capital. At the same time, a Marriott hotel and country club located in Kent sent out staff members to help develop a gardening project for a home that cares for children with terminal ailments. Employees of Cheshunt Marriott Hotel also took part in this month’s green efforts, by picking up litter from a local park.
Although many of these green efforts have been largely local and highly specific in nature, Marriott has also announced several much more extensive projects, aimed at helping the environment. For example, the hotel chain recently entered into an agreeement with Amazonas, one of Brazil’s constituent states, in order to assist in the protection of the Amazon rainforest. Additionally, the hotel firm is also making important changed to the way it conducts its own business, by using less water and energy, as well as by trying to use eco-friendly supply companies whenever possible.
