Massive car tax by green think tank
Posted on: October 28th, 2009 by Taylor SmithTransport within the UK is already an expensive commodity and the latest thinking of a green nature is that a new car tax of £3,300 should be levied to make us think twice about buying a new car. This is just a drop in the ocean though for the Green Fiscal Commission (GFC) as they are proposing £150 billion of measures, which include increasing fuel duty by 300 per cent over the next 10-years and handing out a green tax on our homes. The proposals by GFC will be officially unveiled on Monday by Lord Turner, who is one of the commissioners for the group set up the government.
The recommendations are for a greener UK and aims to only tax those that offend the most, while others that use greener methods for everyday life will be relatively untouched. A reduction in national insurance and tax will be implemented to offset the new charges, so to make it equal to how people live. The car tax they plan would be on new cars and would start at £300 next year, increasing to £3,300 by 2020. The main idea of the system would be to impose an ‘eco-tax’ so only those that offend with pollution would have to pay the hefty price.
Many countries around the world are now looking at ways that they can cut their carbon emissions. A meeting by world countries in December on climate change is set to unveil plans to reduce pollution from air traffic back down to levels seen in 2005 by the year 2050.
