On Tuesday evening, millions of London commuters and visitors to the capital were facing travel disruptions and potential chaos as talks broke down that were aimed at averting a 48-hour strike on the Tube.

From 7:00pm on Tuesday until 7:00pm on Thursday, thousands of Rail, Maritime and Transport (RMT) union members intend to stage a walk-out, bringing the Underground network to a standstill.

London Mayor Boris Johnson and Transport for London (TfL) have organised contingency plans to help commuters get to their jobs - including additional buses, taxi-sharing schemes and routes to guide cyclists around the city.

The mayor called the strike a “ludicrous and unnecessary disruption” to life in the capital and was very critical of union leaders.

He said: “Londoners and commuters trying to do their level best to cope with the most challenging economic climate for a long time will be furious at this decision.”

A statement on the TfL website read in part: “The proposed strike from 19:00 on Tuesday 9 June will have a significant impact on services which will not return to normal until Friday morning 12 June.”
