Monarch to fill some of gap left by XL

Monarch Airlines will be operating a route previously served by XL Airways before its collapse, from Gatwick airport to the Caribbean.

Weekly flights on the carrier to Grenada and Tobago will begin on 17 December.

Monarch will provide service on an Airbus A330, with 307 economy-class seats and 51 in premium economy.

Seats on the flights are being offered by travel operator Golden Caribbean, at prices that are close to what XL Airways charged.

Golden Caribbean’s commercial director, David Mortimer, said: “We are delighted that we have been able to secure, at relatively short notice, an aeroplane to fill the void left by the failure of XL and provide essential airlift to the islands of Tobago and Grenada.”

He added: “It was important to re-establish these services as quickly as possible and, in anticipation of more stabilised market conditions, we are confident that holidaymakers will find that this new service is one that they can have complete faith in.”

Mortimer said that he felt holidaymakers would be comfortable booking their holidays flights on an establish carrier such as Monarch, and added that his travel company is pleased that the airline is filling the gap created by the collapse of XL.
