Search crews have recovered 17 more bodies hundreds of kilometres off the coast of Brazil, from last week’s crash of the Air France Airbus A330-200 that disappeared amid turbulent conditions.

Spokesmen for the Brazilian air force and navy reported finding nine bodies in the Atlantic Ocean, in the area where the passenger jet went down. A French vessel has also been taking part in the search, and its crew located eight additional bodies, according to military officials.

Air France flight 447 disappeared over a week ago, flying over the Atlantic Ocean, off the north-eastern coast of Brazil, as it was on route from Rio de Janeiro to Paris with 228 people on board.

The bodies were recovered at a site approximately 1,100 kilometers off Brazil’s coast. Items have also been found in the area that were confirmed to have come from the aircraft, including a wing section, passenger luggage and a briefcase containing a ticket on the doomed flight, a spokesman for the Brazilian air force said to CNN.

As ocean currents have most likely caused the debris and the bodies to drift over the last week, the exact site of the crash has not yet been determined.
