MP says Australia needs stricter rules for foreign nationals hiring cars

Great Ocean RoadA member of the Australian Parliament says more effective rules are needed to improve safety for foreign tourists who hire cars. Sarah Henderson says before hire companies release vehicles, hirers should have to demonstrate they have the competency to drive.

The Liberal backbencher says all international hirers have to do to drive in Australia is produce their home country driving licences and they are good to go. She carried on by saying the high number of accidents, road fatalities and other incidents involving foreign drivers meant their needed to be some kind of skills tests.

Ms Henderson elucidated by saying the whole car industry in Australia needed a shake up. The MP also notes that as well as checks all international drivers should have to watch road safety videos before they are let loose in what is basically a mobile bomb.

Ms Henderson is the representative for Corangamite in the state of Victoria. The Great Ocean Road is a key tourism attraction in the area and passes through Corangamite on its 250km journey close to the coast of the state. Accident figures released for the five-year period to last June suggest more than a fifth of the accidents on the Great Ocean Road involved international visitors.

As well as a number of serious accidents, some of the reported incidents could have had serious ramifications. These included hire car drivers not slowing for stop signs, driving on the wrong (right) side of highways and even just parking up in the centre of the road to snap photos of passing koalas.
