The Canadian province of Quebec is considering legislation that would make wearing helmets on ski slopes mandatory, following the death of stage and screen star Natasha Richardson after an accident at the Mont Tremblant Ski Resort, north of Montreal.
Richardson was taking a ski lesson on a beginners’ course on Monday when she fell. According to the New York City Medical Examiner, the cause of her death was blunt impact to her head.
The death of the actress has added impetus to Quebec’s plan to introduce the helmet requirement, commented sports ministry spokesman Jean-Pascal Bernier, on Thursday. Doctors in the province have been trying to persuade the sports ministry to introduce the legislation.
Sports Minister Michelle Courchesne met with emergency room physicians earlier this week and will be meeting with ski resort operators in the near future, according to Bernier.
Quebec emergency room physicians attempted to persuade the minister to make helmets mandatory. They first called for the regulation three weeks ago.
“The minister wants to see what kind of regulation can be made by the government to make the wearing of the helmet an obligation,” the spokesman told the Associated Press.
The spokesman added that Courchesne would not be meeting with officials at the Mont Tremblant resort about the death of the 45-year-old actress.
