National Car Rental tries to predict US election results

National Car Rental mapNational Car Rental has gotten a little curious about if the division of which US states typically vote Democrat and Republican (blue and red respectively) has had a psychological effect on voters.  To satisfy this curiosity, the car rental operator looked into its own data to determine the most popular colour its customers choose for their hired vehicle (when given a choice).  Although the most popular colour was actually silver overall, the company’s research did find a coincidence between the preferences and the typical political sides that states lean towards.

Analysts have created a map of the typical side a state takes during a new presidential election – Democrat or Republican – and this new map from National Car Rental of the colours its customers choose is unexpectedly similar.  Overall, 54% of renters choose a blue vehicle, while 46% choose a red one when given the option.  Surprisingly, 40 of the 50 states on the political map match the car colour preference of National’s customers.  The ten states that were different between maps are:

  • Alaska – chooses Blue cars, votes Red
  • Idaho – chooses Blue cars, votes Red
  • Indiana – chooses Blue cars, votes Red cars
  • Kansas – chooses Red cars, votes Blue
  • Minnesota – chooses Blue cars, votes Red
  • Nebraska – chooses Red cars, votes Blue
  • South Carolina – chooses Red cars, votes Blue
  • Tennessee – chooses Red cars, votes Blue
  • Washington – chooses Blue cars, votes Red
  • Wyoming – chooses Red cars, votes Blue

According to the National Car Rental map, President Barack Obama was safe to be re-elected before the election even started.  However, the actual results of the election differed from the map that the car hire company put together based on car colour preferences.  Here are the differences:

  • Alaska – chooses Blue cars, voted Red
  • Florida – chooses Red cars, leaning towards Blue
  • Idaho – chooses Blue cars, voted Red
  • Indiana – chooses Blue cars, voted Red
  • Kansas – chooses Blue cars, voted Red
  • Minnesota – chooses Red cars, voted Blue
  • Nebraska – chooses Blue cars, voted Red
  • North Carolina – chooses Blue cars, voted Red
  • South Carolina – chooses Blue cars, voted Red
  • Tennessee – chooses Blue cars, voted Red
  • Utah – chooses Blue cars, voted Red
  • Washington – chooses Red cars, voted Blue
  • West Virginia – chooses Blue cars, voted Red

Despite these 13 differences, President Obama was still re-elected.  However, we can’t say for sure that this had anything to do with the psychological effect politics has had on the car colour preferences of consumers.
