National Express the transport company revealed yesterday morning that they were handing control of the London Edinburgh East Coast (NXEC) back into control of public ownership. At the same time the departure of Richard Bowker, chief executive of National Express, was released to the public. The former chief executive was the man who sanctioned the move for the rail franchise.

The route was part of three franchises won by National Express and the government expressed that if one was handed back then the other two would have to be as well. National Express returned with the fact they had only defaulted on one franchise, so wont be handing back the other two. “National Express has taken and received clear and detailed advice from leading legal counsel upon its, and its subsidiaries’, positions under the east coast and other franchise agreements and is confident that the implication of any NXEC default should be confined to the NXEC franchise,” a National Express statement read.

The transport company has been the recent target of an audacious take over move by rivals FirstGroup. National Express commented on this by saying that it was not the right time to discuss that type of business with everything going including the NXEC issue.
