Eurotest who test the quality and safety of travel in Europe recently released the results on tests they did on car rental companies throughout Europe.
Cars were rented direct from the retailer in the busiest time of the year back in July 2008 and their results were described as “disappointing” and “showing no improvement,” in Greece, Italy, Malta, Portugal, Spain, Croatia and Turkey where 60 different branches were tried.
One car hired was said to have defects including two misshapen front rims, damaged side wall of a tyre and a missing wheel nut. They also tested seven off road vehicles and five of them were said to have bad damage under the chassis, steering or the brakes. They added that passenger safety was also lacking giving grave concern as tourists usually have little experience with these vehicles.
However a trip to Kos, one of the Greek islands showed a smashing example of how a rental car should be. National supplied the under cover testers with Chevrolet Matiz that was in great condition and was well served. They run away with the best car award for 2009.
The test concluded that, “It is important that holidaymakers be able to rest assured that car rental agencies will treat them fairly and inform them correctly, and that the vehicle provided will be in a road-worthy condition.”
