Naturists threaten to sue over beach closure
Posted on: December 9th, 2008 by Taylor SmithA beach stretching for 200yds along the coast at Corton, near Lowestoft in Suffolk is facing closure as much of the surrounding shingle and sand are being lost to erosion.
The beach is hidden from public view by a wooden breakwater, and in 1979 was designated one of the 11 official nudist beaches in Britain.
Officials on the Waveney District Council want to restore the beach to general public use, due to the closures caused by erosion, but are planning to hold a public consultation before making their decision.
Phil Harris, a spokesman for the Council, said: “The bottom line is that there was a long sandy beach when the nudist section opened on a section of it. There was plenty of room for people to enjoy the beach without going anywhere near the nudist part of it if they did not wish to”.
He added: “But it is felt that the shrinking amount of beach due to coastal erosion in recent years means there is not enough for a designated nudist section.”
The Council’s plan is upsetting to the 14,000 members of British Naturism, which represents the estimated 1.5 million nudists in the country.
