As Network Rail begins its £20 billion infrastructure overhaul later this year, it has been reported that as many as 1,000 new jobs will be created.

In addition, the rail company will continue hiring during the five-year work programs – amounting to thousands of more jobs.

This news comes after Network Rail, the owner of both tracks and stations, employed 3,500 workers in 2008, in spite of the economic climate.

Simon Kirby, director of the rail company, said: “Over the next five years Network Rail will invest over £20billion in crucial projects all over the country. We will be taking on thousands of high-calibre people to make this happen.”

Included in Network Rail’s plans is a £5 billion Thameslink revamp, involving the line running from Bedford, continuing on through London, to Brighton.

The rail company’s executives are hoping that the improvements will ease congestion on London’s Tube network.

Birmingham’s New Street station will undergo a £550 million makeover, as well, while London’s King’s Cross station will be the recipient of another £400 million in funds.
