New Apple iPhone feature will stop drivers using phones at wheel

iOS11A forthcoming addition to Apple’s iOS for iPhones will incorporate a feature which will block received messages and notifications when people are driving. A preview of the iOS 11 shows it is being built with a special Do Not Disturb for Driving mode.

Apple unveiled the feature at the just concluded Apple Worldwide Developers Conference in San Jose, California. A demonstration showed the feature will stop the iPhone from displaying any alerts at all until the driver stops the car at his or her destination.

iOS 11 will monitor the user’s behaviour and trigger an alert after a driver reaches a destination. The app will issue prompts asking drivers if they want to activate the Do Not Disturb feature. Once selected, the app stores the selection and it will kick in every time the sensors show the user is driving.

Do Not Disturb will automatically reply to incoming messages saying the recipient is busy. A sender who needs to contact the driver in an emergency can crack the feature by sending a text to the reply with the word urgent added. Passengers in cars will also be able to deactivate the feature.

The iOS 11 app will allow drivers to access the likes of Apple Maps while they are en route, but will block them from keying in new destinations. A Brake foundation spokesperson welcomed the feature and said it would help with the fight to keep the attention of drivers on the road and not on their mobile phones.

Jason Wakeford carried on by saying Brake hoped other mobile phone makers would follow suit with similar apps. Apple’s iOS 11 is due for general release sometime in the autumn.
