New Budapest to Dubai route opens at Ferihegy

SmartWings, a Czech budget carrier, has decided to open a brand new direct route from Budapest’s Ferihegy Airport to Dubai, one of the Gulf’s most dynamic urban centres. SmartWings operates as a discount carrier and will fly passengers from the Hungarian capital to Dubai on Boeing 737-800 planes. During the initial period, the carrier will only be offering a single direct flight per week, which will depart from Budapest each Wednesday, at 14:15. The Budapest Airport, however, noted that what makes this new flight so unique is that it represents the first intercontinental route to be operated from the Hungarian capital by a discount airline. Low cost carriers have thus far been known to launch flights on short-haul routes, but this now appears to be changing.

Dimitrios Gatsonis, Budapest Airport’s director in charge of business development, told journalists that passengers will likely find this new flight to be very convenient, as they will be able to reach Dubai in less than five hours from the Hungarian capital. Gatsonis also expressed hope that further airlines will follow SmartWing’s lead and the number of intercontinental destinations served by Ferihegy will increase in the coming years.

Ferihegy Airport already has direct air links to five destinations in the Middle East, four of which are served by Malev Hungarian Airlines, including Beirut, Damascus, Cairo and Tel Aviv. El Al also offers service on the popular Budapest to Tel Aviv route, while Royal Jordanian flies to Amman.
