Nissan and car rental giant to produce electric cars

Europcar and the car manufacturer Nissan have come to together in partnership to start marketing electric cars in 2010. The joint venture between Nissan and Europcar is a first for the car rental industry and show commitment on behalf of Europcar to educate their own customers in alternative car hire.

The cars will initially be made available in New Zealand and Australia in Australasia and France, UK, Belgium, Spain, Italy, Germany and Portugal in Europe.

This is not the first environmentally project that has been undertaken by Europcar since the Green charter was certified back in 2008 by Bureau Veritas.

“This signature fits perfectly with the principles of our Green charter and our action policy intended to offer our customers a fleet with as limited an impact as possible on the environment. We will thus give our customers the option of exploring a new means of mobility by giving them the unique experience of using an electric vehicle in order to encourage them to become better eco-citizens,” said the chief operating officer of Europcar, Rafael Girona.

The partnership will also begin marketing electric vehicles in Japan and the US next year with a target of mass production worldwide by 2012. There eventual aim will be to have every vehicle on the road being electric.
