No fees for young drivers at Zipcar
Posted on: December 2nd, 2008 by Samantha WilliamsGenerally, if you’re looking to rent a car and are under 25 years of age, most rental companies add on a hefty surcharge.
At a growing number of U.S. colleges, however, students are being offered the option of renting a Zipcar – which doesn’t add an age surcharge.
Zipcar, a popular car-sharing service in a number of American cities, has recently teamed up with 120 colleges and universities, where it offers the same car-sharing service to faculty, staff and students.
An initial fee is required to become a Zipcar member, and then you are able to reserve a vehicle either by the hour or day. There is a mileage cap, which is typically 180 miles per day. Cars are picked up designated parking spots around the city – or campus. The member’s Zipcard unlocks the door and keys are left in the ignition. The car is returned to the same spot at the end of the rental period.
Drivers aged 21 years and above are eligible to rent from Zipcar, without an age surcharge. In some cases, 18 year-old students may be eligible if their college or university has a designated Zipcar fleet on campus.
“We have a membership agreement with universities in almost all those satellite areas to service students under 21,” noted the president and COO of Zipcar, Mark Norman.
