Number of drinkers on the slopes rises

The results of a new study show that the number of people who drink while skiing or snowboarding is increasing.

Overall, as many as 13 per cent of skiers and snowboarders from the UK, and 19 per cent in the 25-34 year old age group, admit that they have been drunk while on the slopes, according to an Insureandgo survey.

Two per cent of the respondents, or 174,000 skiers and snowboarders, said that they had been very drunk while on the slopes. The number last year was around 20,000 lower.

More than 1,000 adults responded to the survey, which found that of those who said they had skied under the influence, 18 per cent had been involved in an accident and three per cent reported that the accident had been a serious one.

The founder of InsureandGo, Perry Wilson, said: “We understand that people are going to have a drink on their holidays, but they still have to be responsible. Being drunk on the slopes is extremely dangerous.”

He added: “If you injure yourself or somebody else as a result of this, you may invalidate your insurance cover, which could mean that, as well as nursing broken bones, you may also have to pay for a hefty medical bill yourself.”
