A bus driver who crashed in New York killing 14 people has claimed he was driven off the road. Police are investigating a statement given by World Wide Tours driver Ophandell Williams that he was clipped by a tractor-trailer on its way back from Connecticut’s Mohegan Sun Casino on Saturday night.
According to state police, however, witnesses have reported seeing the driver speeding before the crash, which happened in the early hours of the morning on Interstate 95. In total, 14 people were killed and several others maimed when the bus crashed into a sign and was dissected. Everyone on the bus was aged between 20 and 50, coming back on an overnight bus from the casino in the city’s China Town area.
The accident is the deadliest road crash to have happened in New York in several years. According to captain of the NYPD’s Emergency Service Unit, Mathew Galvin, there were bodies everywhere when they were working through the wreckage. He added that although several people managed to walk away unharmed from the crash, many died or were very badly injured.
The captain added that in 22 years on the job, he had never seen an accident with such a high human death toll. Around 20 passengers were taken to hospital, and nine of these, including Ophandell Williams, remain in full time care.
