The relationship between students and teachers can sometimes get a little too close, and this was the case for a teacher and student in Oklahoma. An English teacher from Sand Springs had sex in a hotel with one of her 17-year-old students. The woman, who used to be a teacher at Charles Page High School, is Kathleen Queen.
Despite this being considered a rape case because the student was underage, Miss Queen got off with what the student’s parents are calling just a slap on the wrist. She was given a $600 fine, three years of probation and the judge revoked her teaching license. She has managed to avoid any jail time.
Shasta Belty, the mother of the victim, said that she was hoping for even more punishment. Her main goal was to hopefully pin the teacher with some jail time. Belty said that she cried and cursed when she heard the judge’s ruling. She started to worry about her 17-year-old son when he did not come home on March 17, 2012.
The student told his mother that he was going to stay at a friend’s house. However, later her son confessed that he was not with a friend but in a hotel room at Candlewood Suites with a 27-year-old woman that he simply called “Miss.” He was very reluctant to tell her who the woman he was sleeping with was but eventually did say that it was Miss Queen. The mother felt the name sounded familiar, and then her son finally said that it was his fifth-hour English teacher.
The cops were able to catch the teacher in the hotel room at around 5:30 a.m. When they first picked her up, she was booked for first-degree rape. Later, Miss Queen was formally charged with a misdemeanour for contributing to the delinquency of a minor and second-degree rape. According to court records, the misdemeanour was linked to reports that Miss Queen gave the student vodka.
Just last week, the whole case was thrown out. Miss Queen pleaded guilty in court to helping to contribute to the delinquency of a minor. It was likely that this was the result of the plea bargain that her lawyer set up.
The mother believes that the prosecutor believed that they would be happy as long as the teacher never got to teach again. The family was fine with the second-degree rape charge or something that at least showed sexual misconduct. However, they did want her to spend time in jail.
In Oklahoma, the age of consent is 16. The problem for Miss Queen is that she was a teacher, and different rules apply for teachers. The state law says that any sexual act will be considered rape if the adult is a member of the school system and the victim is a student between the ages of 16 and 18.
