Olympian Shaun White charged for public intoxication and vandalising hotel

Shaun White's mugshotOlympic snowboarding medalist Shaun White was charged with public intoxication and vandalism after pulling a hotel’s fire alarm and breaking a phone in Nashville. The Metropolitan Nashville Police Department said that the incident started at 2am on Sunday when officers were called to Loews Vanderbilt Hotel, an upscale hotel that caters to visiting celebrities – like rock bands and professional sports teams. The call said that an intoxicated man set off the fire alarm.

The police report says that the 26-year-old snowboarder seemed to be very intoxicated, and alcohol was very strong on him, while his eyes were bloodshot and red. They say he ran from the hotel after a worker accused him of breaking a phone. When he tried to get away in a cab, a guest at the hotel kept the car from leaving and told the driver he was calling the police. White is said to have overheard the conversation and fled the scene on foot after kicking the guest.

The report continues that the guest pursued White and told him that he called the cops. Then White tried to attack the citizen, but instead he ran into him. This caused the snowboarder to fall backwards and hit his head. He was taken to a hospital to be treated for the head injury, while the guest said he wouldn’t press charges against him.

Although the guest didn’t press charges, the police didn’t think White should get a break. He was arrested on misdemeanor charges of public intoxication and vandalism after he refused to sign a citation. Melinda McDowell, a spokeswoman for the Davidson County Sheriff’s Office, said that the snowboarder was released late Monday afternoon and is free on his own recognizance.

White’s representatives didn’t immediately comment on the incident. However, earlier today the snowboarder issued a public apology on his Facebook page. He apologised for the unwise decisions he made at the weekend and for any inconvenience the events caused his family, friends, business partners, and the Loews Vanderbilt Hotel and its guests. He added that he was celebrating a joyous occasion with a lot of his family and friends, but he got carried away. He’s truly sorry for his poor behaviour.

White isn’t just a professional snowboarder but a skateboarder as well, and he has been since his early teens. He can ride regular stance, at twelve degrees and at negative three degrees on his board. He was once nicknamed “The Flying Tomato” because of his uncommonly red hair and has been called “Animal” in reference to The Muppet Show character.

White won his two Olympic gold medals for the halfpipe competitions in the 2006 and 2010 Winter Olympics. At this year’s Winter X Games, he became the first competitor to score a perfect 100 in the men’s Snowboard Superpipe. White has also won several other medals – too many to list here.
