In the latest bi-annual renewal period, one hundred UK travel companies did not renew their ATOL licences, according to the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA).

The CAA expects, however, that small travel operators not renewing their ATOL licences by the end of March will do so shortly.

During the March renewal period, a total of 1,019 travel firms completed renewal applications. Of that number, 1,004 have already received decisions from the CAA.

By 1 April, 913 operators had renewed their licences, and another 25 renewed by 3 April, according to the aviation authority.

Andy Cohen, the head of ATOL licensing at the CAA, said: “The travel industry is trading in exceptionally difficult economic conditions. The application of the CAA’s financial licensing criteria seeks to ensure that firms will have the financial resources to trade through these difficult conditions and that consumers can continue to have confidence in booking holidays with ATOL holders.”

Cohen added: “The majority of firms that did not renew on time were Small Business ATOL holders. Due to the nature of their business, renewing on time is often less critical since they are not dependent on trading with an ATOL, but we expect most to renew shortly.”
