Open Skies Treaty between US and EU finally takes effect
Posted on: March 30th, 2008 by Frank ToddThe open skies treaty between the United States and the European Union has finally taken effect, providing the airlines better flexibility in terms of travel between EU and US destinations. What was expected was more flights and lower fares, however in reality, the passengers will get more flights and mixed fares. If you wish to fly to United States in the next few months, you stand to get a good deal on your trip.
Despite these positive developments, if the fuel prices continue their upward trend, it is going to eventually lead to back to square one situation. In the opinion of Tom Parsons, the representative of BestFares.com, the travel website, sales on the summer flights is expected to start soon and travelers can expect good bargains.
The place to witness the immediate effect of the agreement is London’s busy Heathrow airport. The level of traffic is bound to increase with immediate effect. Until now it was only to US airlines, United and American, who were flying to Heathrow. These two carriers will soon be joined by Northwest, Delta and Continental Airlines. Delta has plans for two flights a day to Heathrow from JFK and Atlanta. It is also going to introduce daily flights from Los Angeles. On the other hand, Northwest is going to launch daily service from Minneapolis-St Paul and will later introduce flights from Seattle and Detroit as well. As regards Continental, it will operate two flights per day from Newark and Houston. British Airways, in the meanwhile, is going to move its Houston service to Heathrow and Gatwick flights to Dallas-Fort Worth.
