P&O Cruises’ vessel Pacific Dawn was cleared by health authorities in New South Wales on Monday and departed in the evening from Sydney on a 10-night cruise to Queensland.
Passenger embarkation had been delayed earlier by the health department of New South Wales in order to run tests on four passengers on the ship’s last cruise that had fallen ill.
NSW Health has confirmed that two of the four passengers tested positive for the swine flu virus and are now being isolated at their homes. One member of the crew was also diagnosed as having the virus.
The crew member was one of 14 staff that left the ship voluntarily on Monday after telling health authorities that they were not feeling well.
A spokesperson for P&O Cruises said: “We have worked very closely with the NSW and Federal authorities and Pacific Dawn has sailed with the full approval of these authorities,” adding: “We offered an additional precaution of disembarking a small number of crew who have reported flu-like symptoms.”
