Paris Costs Most for Club Sandwich

A Club SandwichAccording to research published by Hotels.com this week, Paris has been named the most expensive city around the world to buy a club sandwich in. This sandwich features chicken, egg, bacon, lettuce and mayonnaise; and they can be bought in hotels across the globe. It has been used as an affordability measure by Hotel.com, with its Club Sandwich Index (CSI) giving holidaymakers an indication of how much their holiday destination may cost.

The average price in the CSI has been calculated by taking the real price a guest pays for a club sandwich and comparing it from 30 hotels in the capital city of every country included in the study. Total, the prices of club sandwiches in over 750 hotels in 26 countries were analysed.

The CSI showed prices in Paris, France ranged from just £13.72 (or US$22.20) at a two-star venue to a whopping £33.44 ($54.10) at a five-star establishment. This means the average cost of a club sandwich is £20.43 ($33.10). The second most expensive is in Geneva, Switzerland at £20.10 ($32.56); the third most costs £18.83 ($30.50) is in Oslo, Norway; the fourth is in Tokyo, Japan at £17.07 ($27.65); and the fifth most expensive is £14.95 ($24.22) in Rome, Italy.

On the opposite side, however, the cheapest club sandwich costs £5.91 ($9.57) in New Delhi, India. The second cheapest can be found in Mexico City, Mexico for £6.29 ($10.19); the third least expensive is £6.61 ($10.71) in Buenos Aires, Argentina; the fourth cheapest is in Bogota, Colombia at £8.70 ($14.09); and the fifth least costly is £8.94 ($14.48). (See the full CSI below.)

Hotels.com global communications director Alison Couper says that many holidaymakers don’t always factor the cost of everyday items into their decision-making process when they plan a trip. These kinds of items include food and drink. By providing the Club Sandwich Index to their users, they offer the perfect way for them to assess the real cost of a destination. Paris very well may be the world’s gastronomic capital, but holidaymakers might be better off buying a croque-monsieur since a club sandwich costs an average £20.43 ($33.10), he added.
